life lately + free wallpaper download + a giveaway

before I get to the giveaway, it's time for a life update. because I have a stash of 5-almost-ready posts hanging out in my draft folder and I'm just not feeling any of them today. in fact, it's dark and rainy out and I feel a bit of a ramble coming on. so grab a cup of coffee [or wine] and let's have a chat, shall we? here's what's been happening around these parts lately...

apartment hunting

we found an apartment in Taipei! during our first trip we looked at several apartments. none of them had exactly the situation we wanted, but one we had designated as a "this will work/backup plan/if nothing better appears" option.

when we went for our second day of viewing, last weekend, I almost died of panic. the first thing the realtor told us was that the place we were interested in from our last trip was, as he spoke, being signed over to someone else. 5 minutes later, he received a phone call from someone else who was curious about the apartment we were about to view. as we were looking through and trying to see if it would work for us, he was taking photos to send to someone else. we then went to a second apartment, after which we were told that was all there was available to view.

so we had to decide between the 2 places we had seen that day, and if we wanted to be sure to have an apartment at all, we had to make our decision pretty much right that moment. not the ideal situation, but the place we ended up with is actually a great space. it's further from the MRT [Taipei's subway] but literally across the street from a giant park and just at the foot of the mountains. I feel like I have whiplash from the whole experience, but I'm looking forward to moving in at the end of July and setting up our new home.

packing things

right, so we know where our stuff is going now. that means it has to be sorted and ready to go there. you guys know my feelings about packing for vacation. so just multiply that by a thousand and you have my feelings on packing for a move.

add to this a few things: our stuff is actually being moved in a few weeks, even though we won't be in that apartment until we return to Taiwan at the end of July. and two days after our stuff is moved, I am flying back to the states for summer. [let's not even talk about the bridesmaid dress that is waiting at my parent's house which may or may not fit that will have to be worn just a few days after that.]

watching things

if you are a fan of Penny Dreadful, you might have found the end of this week's episode a bit disturbing. if you are a fan of Game of Thrones, then you definitely found the end of that episode cringe-worthy. I made the poor choice of watching these shows back to back. I thought GoT would cheer me up or at least give me something other than torture and murder to think about. oh, be careful what you wish for. no spoilers here, but that is the first departure from the books that I've really hated.

in an effort to get something else into my brain, I flipped through our DVD collection and re-discovered the Planet Earth series. it feels like it aired forever ago, but I can tell you it is still stunning. I haven't seen it since moving abroad and it was really interesting because I actually knew where these places were and had even been to some of them. it gave me serious wanderlust itches.

creating things

speaking of. I've recently discovered Creative Market. have you ever heard of this place? [warning: you will become obsessed.] I've downloaded some new fonts and textures and can't stop myself from playing around with them. since right now most of my creations are just hanging out on my hard drive, I thought I'd share a desktop wallpaper for your guys to download. [if you guys are into this kind of stuff let me know, and I might make it a regular-ish occurrence.]

a quick hello + a cash giveaway

I've been up and down and around this island over the past few weeks, and I have to tell you I'm exhausted. having visitors in town is always fun, but leaves me feeling like I need a vacation. am I the only one? we roamed Hsinchu on foot, took the high speed down to Kaohsuing for my first visit south, wandered Taipei, hiked through Taroko, and rode gondolas in Maokong. I love that visitors are an excuse to play tourist and try new things [and for their photography skills, as evidenced above.]

I have so much to blog about that it's tough to know where to start... as you can see it is already wednesday and I have yet to post this week! I started working on something this afternoon, a post which might include some of my most favorite temple photos ever taken. [and not a single dragon, if you can believe it.] but for some reason I just can't bring myself to publish it yet. hopefully you all will find it worth the wait once it makes an appearance.

happy friday + a giveaway

this week has flown by. I've been guest lecturing in Husband's class, teaching his ninth graders how to set up their own blogs. we had them set up about me pages, taught them how to do labels and links, and let them go wild with customizing their own templates and designs. it's been a lot of fun, but I'm glad it's friday!

in just a little over a month, I'm heading back to the states. this seems so unreal to me. the truth is I'm anxious to be back in the land of tacos and bacon and gluten-free beer, have my kittens to snuggle with, and to escape the humidity. but I'm doing my best to soak up life in Taiwan while I have it. the next few weeks will be crazy with travels and adventures, so I don't think it will be too difficult.

[as always, you'll be able to follow along on twitter and instagram]

this weekend I still have some cleaning to do before my friend arrives, and I've been working on another washi tape wall art project to share. but before I get back to that I want to take a moment to introduce you to my featured sponsor for the month, and share an amazing giveaway!

Kirsten is the sweet Australian behind the blog Kirsten Learns, where she chronicles her adventures in learning...just about everything! I loved her post on getting to know your camera in manual mode [ so helpful for beginners] and this adorable DIY candle in a teacup. I can't wait to see what she decides to tackle next!

Hello there! I'm Kirsten and I live in Australia with my husband and two cats. I started my blog to document myself learning the things I have always wanted to learn, and just becoming a less average and more awesome person in general. I've also started to make YouTube videos which has been both a frightening and enjoyable experience!

what is your favorite trip you've ever taken? I've only recently returned from a 2 month trip to the USA & Canada, which was by far the best holiday I've ever been on. This might have something to do with the fact that I got married while I was over there! You can totally read about that on my blog oooooohh yeah shameless plug.

what are your travel plans or goals for this year? I WISH I WAS TRAVELLING. But nope. My only goals are to grow my blog, finish uni (I'm studying to be a teacher) and to learn a whole bunch of new things.

where would your dream travels take you? I want to go back to America SO BADLY! Otherwise I have always wanted to visit Iceland. Apparently they are really obsessed with elves there? Or Japan because they are opening the Wizarding World of Harry Potter there this year. Just TAKE ME EVERYWHERE PLEASE.

describe yourself in 3 words: I like cake.

a visit to Nanliao Beach + a giveaway!

like most things in Taiwan, the beach at Nanliao turned out to be not quite what we had expected.

the first time we went there, I had high hopes. [some people just never learn.] the beach is not exactly one you'd like to visit for swimming or sunning. but there's enough of interest in the area to keep us coming back from time to time.

Jackie and I have been going on adventures together lately. we like to get out and explore, have life chats, and play with our cameras. I'm trying to keep up with posting these adventures because I want you to see Taiwan. and also, I have so much Bali I need a break sometimes. a few weeks ago our adventure destination by scooter was Nanliao Beach.

Nanliao is a strange place. it's a fishing port that thinks it wants to be a beach town. [I'm hoping to make it down to Taiwan's actual beach town of Kenting in a few months, where the beach is what you picture when you think of a beach.] on breezy days you can find people flying kites of all shapes and sizes, and you can also rent bikes to ride up and down the coast. there is an intense looking seafood place that we haven't tried, and a very tasty wood-fired pizza spot that we have. the boardwalk sports some interesting artwork crafted from what I assume is local driftwood.

it was much colder than we had expected, so we stopped at a local cafe for some wine + coffee to warm up. we wandered around the boardwalk and the nearby temple [I can never resist dragons] then headed out to the seawall.

to get up to the top of the wall, you have to climb your choice of rickety driftwood ladders tied with rope. the wind whips your hair into snarls, but when this hazy view of the Taiwan Straight is all you can get... it grows on you.

oh. and beware the bicycling lobsters.
